The myth of Queen Elizabeth

Far too many republicans seem to have fallen for all the silly and unquestioned myths that surround Queen Elizabeth. The idea that she works tirelessly and selflessly for the good of the people is the biggest one. It is trotted out by her devotees and repeated by the news media all too often and many republicans seem reluctant to challenge a myth so pervasive.

Mood of the nation: we don't care about monarchy

UMR has published its annual mood of the nation survey, and it's not good news for the monarchy. Despite 2011 being the "biggest" year for the firm since Charles and Diana were hitched in 1981, the wedding of William and Kate didn't even rate a mention.

Introducing our draft policy statement

Back last June, Lewis blogged about formalising the Movement's policy position. At last October's AGM, it was agreed the Executive would prepare a draft document setting out our policies for discussion.

Referendum questions

The Scottish Government has released a consultation document on its proposed independence referendum. It's an interesting read for anyone proposing a constitutional referendum. The focus, of course, has been on the question to be asked. The Scottish Government proposes this question:

RIP Lloyd Morrison, 1957-2012

We are very sorry today to hear of the passing of Lloyd Morrison.  This great New Zealander was a business leader and Wellington identity and was a central figure in the campaign for the country to adopt a new flag.
