Submissions made by the Republican Movement.
The Republican Movement's submission to the Justice and Electoral Select Committee was written in consultation with our members of the legal fraternity. As you'd expect, we oppose the dumping of the title "Senior Counsel" and restoration of King/Queen's Counsel.
Dean Knight and myself presented the Republican Movement's submission on the Governor-General Bill to the Government Administration select committee at Parliament today. To re-cap, our submission was:
- The Republican Movement supports ending the Governor-General's tax-free status and modernising the expense structure of the office.
- We believe the appointment, dismissal and tenure of the Governor-General should be defined in the Governor-General Bill.
As expected, most of our submission was about the second point. Present at the committee were: Chairman David Parker and Chris Hipkins of Labour, National's John Hayes, Kunal Jit Singh Bakshi, Jacqui Dean and Nikki Kaye. Green MP Keith Locke also sat in on the deliberations. Journalists for NZPA and Radio New Zealand were also present, along with representatives of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (who administer the Bill).
The only other oral submission was by retired journalist Derek Round, who wants the committee to amend the Constitution Act 1986 so that the Governor-General succeeds the Queen as our head of state. Apparently this idea came about following a lunch between Mr Round and Sir Geoffrey Palmer. An innovative approach.
Submissions for the Governor-General Bill have now closed. The Republican Movement's submission is attached below. Both myself and Dean Knight (well, mainly Dean) put together the submissions and the provisions that go with it. It will be interesting to see if the Select Committee wants to take oral submissions.
A little late on this - the Holidays Act Ministerial Action Group has
reported back to the minister of Labour, self-declared monarchist
Kate Wilkinson.
The Republican Movement's submission on UnitedFuture's "Stepping Forward" national identity policy discussion document is in the mail to UnitedFuture, and online in our policy papers section.
Thanks to the Republican Movement members who sent their thoughts on this. In the end, our submission suggested that:
- UnitedFuture adopt a policy of supporting an independent inquiry into republicanism; and
- UnitedFuture adopt a policy of supporting a referendum on a republic.
In other words, the Republican Movement strongly put forward our own policies - public education and a referendum on a republic.
