Constitutional Advisory Panel
The Minister of Maori Affairs has announced the Constitutional Advisory Panel (CAP), a group formed as part of the Constitutional Review. The Republican Movement has welcomed the panel - it's very representative politically and socially, much like ourselves! However we continue to call for the government to add the republic issue into the review's terms of reference. The CAP's role is to look after the consultation process for the review, in effect to act like a parliamentary select committee would in receiving evidence.
Members of the CAP are:
- Co-chairs: Emeritus Professor John Burrows, Sir Tipene O'Regan
- Members:
Peter Chin, Deborah Coddington, Michael Cullen, John Luxton, Bernice Mene, Leonie Pihama, Hinurewa Poutu, Linda Smith, Peter Tennent, and Ranginui Walker.
Of the members of the committee, only Dr Cullen and Professor Walker have expressed their views on republicanism publicly (although Deborah Coddington complained about the "People's Republic of Aotearoa back in 2000, presumably because of the Labour government).
