Constitutional review: Friday wrap-up

Hopefully there will be plenty more of these to do in the coming weeks and months:

  • Turkeys will never vote for Christmas says the Gisborne Herald on longer Parliamentary terms. The paper comments: The announcement of the review was drowned out by the fact its terms of reference omitted the question of whether we should become a republic. John Key made his thoughts clear — “it’s just not something I think is in New Zealand’s best interests” — proving that debate was already being stifled to suit political priorities. This question will remain on the national agenda, though — more so when Queen Elizabeth passes on and the Treaty of Waitangi settlement process is completed.
  • Iwi Plan to Hold Own Constitutional Review - well, actually Margaret Mutu and Moana Jackson.
  • The New Zealand Herald's editorial from Thursday states that the Treaty must be central to constitutional discussions.
  • Dean Knight has a full run-down on his blog of other reactions.
