Everybody loves a wedding

For some reason there's an expectation that, as republicans, we "hate" the fact that Prince William and Kate Catherine got married last night. The NZPA interviewed myself last night and again this morning and was surprised to hear that I was actually watching the events unfolding (don't worry, I've recorded the Breakers Game as well). The Republican Movement's view remains unchanged: weddings are fun, and this one was a great public spectacle. But that's it. The opponents of change did their best to spin this as a wonderful New Zealand event, with some claiming that the wedding has set us back by "50 years". Wishful thinking. I  would say it's more like 5 years.

When Prince Charles and Lady Di were married, the existence of the Republican Movement was unthinkable. Our own research shows there was barely any media criticism of that wedding, apart from Bruce Jesson and some die hard communists (mind you, there was still a Soviet Union back then). Mainstream opinion was pro-monarchy. Today, even the Prime Minister has to acknowledge that public opinion on the monarchy is divided.
