The Involuntary Monarch

After my earlier blog post about the Swedish King, Carl XVI Gustaf, I got talking with a close Swedish family friend about the Swedish monarchy.  Apparently, a book was published about the King last year entitled Carl XVI Gustaf: the Involuntary Monarch (a direct translation of Carl XVI Gustaf: den motvillige monarken) and it contained various accusations of a lewd and promiscuous nature.  It appears that few Swedes believe his recent denials of the claims, although the Swedish Government is resisting creating a Truth Commission to investigate them.

I have never seen any suggestion of similar improprieties from any of our monarchs (although according to Wikipedia, Carl XVI Gustaf is 203rd in line to become New Zealand's Head of State).  However, surely the best thing for New Zealand is to have a Head of State who actually wants to be that person!  What better way of demonstrating a desire to be so than by winning an election proving it?  At the end of the day, I see New Zealand becoming a republic not as anything to do with particular monarchs; it's about what's best for New Zealand!

I wish all our readers a relaxing and peaceful Queens Birthday Weekend.  I look forward to catching you after the break with more analysis of what's best for New Zealand.

Cheers,
Mike Wilkinson
