Labour to vote on republic referendum policy
At Labour's conference today, a remit for a binding referendum on a New Zealand republic will be voted on. There's strong indications that the majority of Labour's supporters are in favour of such a policy. We've commissioned a poll asking if New Zealanders want such a vote - the overall result was 47% support for a referendum when the Queen goes, versus 44% opposed. Critically, the among Labour supporters the result was 54% in favour.
As The Sunday Star-Times reports, our Treasurer Kieran McAnulty has lobbied very hard for this change - and, fingers crossed, today Labour will support the policy of holding a binding referendum.
If it does, Labour will join the Greens and United Future in having policies. This will be a huge step forward for the debate.
