Letters to the editor, 17 April 2012
This interesting letter to the editor made it into The Dominion Post this morning. The seems to be much focus on what's to come after the passing of Queen Elizabeth.
As the British Queen's real birthday approaches on April 21, we're reminded that she's now a very old woman, yet the Government still procrastinates over considering the constitutional changes that might be required on her death.I guess this underlines how unimportant the head of state is in our constitution. Nevertheless, I don't think New Zealanders would find any of the Queen's offspring or other foreigner acceptable holders of this position.Perhaps, in the interim, the government- appointed governor-general could become our real head of state till we decide how this position is to be filled, if indeed we need such a position at all.If we act smartly, perhaps we could avoid the embarrassment of having the Queen's heir and his consort, whom few respect, visiting us next year.MURRAY EGGERSParaparaumu
