Monarchists: electing the GG will make New Zealand unstable; like Papua New Guinea
These comparisons are getting tiresome, but they shed light on the thinking of those who oppose a New Zealand republic. They think a New Zealand republic would be like Lebanon with its deep-seated religious problems, or the United States because of one presidential election 10 years ago, or that New Zealanders are stupid and would elect a pop star as president, and that it's degrading to have to bow to someone from "down the road". On that note,
Monarchy New Zealand's latest newsletter is out, with a piece (probably lifted from this blog) about the troubles Papua New Guinea has had in electing a new Governor-General. They conclude by saying:
If ever there was a reason not to turn the position of Governor-General into an elected, partisan position, surely this is it.
The scary thing is, they're dead serious. They think that if New Zealand were to make the office of Governor-General elected by a two-thirds majority of parliament, the outcome would be exactly like the fractious norm of politics in Papua New Guinea. C'mon guys, do you really think so lowly of New Zealanders and their elected representatives? I really doubt you do, given your involvement in politics yourselves.
