Ngā mihi o te Rā o Waitangi ki te Aotearoa!
Today I'm off to Manukau's Waitangi Day celebrations, to celebrate our country's 172nd birthday. Today, the Republican Movement has just published our draft policy statement for public discussion. This is an important step in our campaign to raise the profile of a New Zealand republic at the forthcoming Constitutional review. In an interview with Prime TV about it yesterday, I pointed out why we did this today: it's an important time to discuss where we're going in the next 60 years - our future.
In a similar vein, the opponents of a New Zealand republic are off celebrating not our nation's birthday, but the Queen's 60th ascension to the throne. If there's anything that's symbolic of our differing stances it's this. Oh, and they're over the moon that Prince Charles - the man who would be King - is coming to New Zealand in November. New Zealand is clearly not a priority for Charlie - the main events for the Queen's Jubilee are happening in June, and we'd expected the tour to be about then.

Saw you losers on telly the otha night. God Save the Queen! Every Second she reigns is a defeat for you. Give up losers
Unfortunately Anon, I don't give up, nor will the Republican Movement. Sure, the Queen continues to reign - but every second is bringing us closer to a New Zealand republic.
Come on, Anon. Stop being so boring! God's a bit busy down here defending NZ. If the Queen were to spend any time down here (as if that would ever happen), she may need to look after her own neck. ;-)
Boring AM I!!! Well perhpas its fun to try to harm our Queen as you have just said, as if you were going to cut off her hed!!!
Anon, I think you need a sense of humour, and possibly spell check.
Anon, as Lewis said, you could do with a sense of humor. You could also do with a sense of respect for the your fellow human. No where in my comment did I wish harm to our monarch, I was just was referring to whether He had time to watch out for her. In fact, I wish the UK monarchy all the best for the next 60 years.
