Our framework: focus on our Head of State

In this recent post, I introduced our draft policy statement.  This was something the Executive has developed, following agreement at our last AGM, and I'm now summarising it for the benefit of our blog readers.  The full document can be read on the Movement's page dedicated to its policies here.

I'm summarising the document in two series of posts.  This is my fourth and final post of the first series summarising our framework for an NZ republic.  It follows on from the third post in my series here.  I follow the same format of it by describing the relevant part of our framework before including, in italics, a description of why we've adopted that part.

4. Focus on our Head of State
The final sub-section of our framework outlines that we are focused on the office and role of the Head of State.  Until decided otherwise with due process, we call for a New Zealand republic to:
  • Not change the current standing of the Treaty of Waitangi
  • Not change its membership of the Commonwealth
  • Retain NZ's flag
  • Use God Defend New Zealand as our only national anthem and
  • Retain New Zealand's national system of honours.

We included this sub-section to show we focus on the Head of State.  After we've become a republic, it is quite possible that some of the above five points may eventually be changed through political or judicial processes.  However, we call for none of them to change until after those processes have occurred.

As I said, this is the final post of this series.  I'll link to the next series, which will summarise the process by which we believe New Zealand should become a republic, once I've put it up.
