Prince Charles here in November

Our campaign received a boost today as John Key has announced that England's Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess will be here in November as part of the royal family's diamond jubilee visits. The Herald reports Key as saying he is 'looking forward to joining all New Zealanders in welcoming them'.  However it is a plain fact that NOT all New Zealanders will be welcoming him.

Over a million of us don't want him and we aren't interested in the big jubilee PR drive. Republic supporters both here and in the UK reject outright any attempt by Charles to assume the position of Head of State. By virtue of his birth Charles is a diplomatic representative of the British Government. Like any visiting dignitary he will be accorded an official welcome. However lets not ignore the very obvious fact that this visit is all about promoting the Monarchy and Charles.

These royal visits are the royal equivalent of an election campaign. Put in an appearance, make a few speeches, smile at some children, visit a hospital and say nice things about New Zealand and how much the family has always liked us. He will be doing what he can to ingratiate himself with the public. We have eight months to plan our reception for the unelected and unelectable Charles Windsor.

November aye? After all the big celebrations are over? After the Olympics? Guess that shows you how much they care about us - the last little colonial outpost at the end of the line. Talk about a smack in the face on our national holiday.

The GG's website now has a list of Diamond Jubilee events. All three of them. We'll keep an eye on that...
