'Public should choose Governor General'

Newstalk ZB reports:

New Zealand's Republican Movement wants Kiwis to be able to have a say in appointing the country's next Governor General.

The appointment to New Zealand's top office was to be discussed when Cabinet meets for the first time today, but that's been postponed.

Republican Movement chair Lewis Holden wants Kiwis to be able to nominate potential candidates and for Parliament to make the final vote.

"There's potential for abuse in current system and we think that you need to take that power out of the hands of the Prime Minister and ensure it's in legislation."

Sir Anand Satyanand's term finishes in May.
