The Republic of Canterbury
A Christchurch member, Rik Tindall, has written a constitution for the "Republic of Canterbury" as a protest against the suspension of the Canterbury regional council (Environment Canterbury) and the Canterbury Earthquake Reconstruction Authority (CERA). As a non-partisan group, the Republican Movement takes no view on either issue, although I suspect many of our members would abhor the loss of democracy for the people of Canterbury at the regional level:
An elected head of state, as promoted by the Republican Movement of Aotearoa New Zealand (RMANZ), is a primary objective of the Republic of Canterbury; immediate restoration of regional democratic processes is another. Central government abrogated the latter without due cause or hearing in April 2010, when appeal to the Governor-General was also ignored. Both actions were insupportable.
If you're a republican in Christchurch or Canterbury, why not join your local Republican Movement Group?
