This was the speech then, of a future king, and he surely wowed most in the crowd with his manner – one which seemed to acknowledge willingly that the day was about Christchurch and New Zealand rather than the visit of a royal celebrity. The recent appointment of current spy chief and long-time army man Jerry Mateparae as New Zealand's next governor-general must also have set back the republicanism cause. Whether that is in New Zealand's best interests is another matter, but it is the reality.
