RIP Lloyd Morrison, 1957-2012
We are very sorry today to hear of the passing of Lloyd Morrison. This great New Zealander was a business leader and Wellington identity and was a central figure in the campaign for the country to adopt a new flag. He was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2009 and eventually succumbed to this aggressive cancer. In reflection of his efforts for our country, he was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit also in 2009.
Lloyd was an amazing man and his passing is a great loss for the country.

Whats Changing a Flag got to do with a republic?
The two issues run parallel but are different in substance. A republic is about constitutional change to the distribution and arrangement of political and cultural power but it is also in part a symbolic change. Changing the flag is purely about national symbolism. Both Republicans and flag change supporters are looking to make changes that will better reflect contemporary NZ society. Lloyd Morrison was a fellow campaigner on an issue that many republicans also support. Not all republicans support removing the British flag from our flag but a great many do. I never met the man but Lewis talked with him a number of times.
I first met Lloyd back in 2004, when NZ Flag were collecting signatures for a referendum on the flag issue. I was a volunteer for them (I met Will de Cleene on the same campaign, he was the Wellington campaign co-ordinator). We ended up falling short (we got 100,000 signatures, 150,000 short in the end), largely because NZ Post wouldn't distribute the petition. But the experience was great and Lloyd's enthusiasm was never in doubt. I recall manning a stall on Waitangi Day 2005 along with Lloyd, arguing with all comers and convincing some people.
