Royal exit? Yeah right

A Tui billboard idea.

The Women's Weekly has run out of Royal gossip and other meaningless titillation to publish. They've decided to simply make stuff up. Usually I wouldn't bother commenting on the magazine mindless nonsense, but this week's edition takes the cake and eats it.

According to this week's edition, a "big announcement" is to be made by the Queen at the end of the year, involving a plan to make Prince William the next British monarch and therefore our next head of State. This is according to "sources close to the Queen." What makes this interesting is the succession law implications, which are much too complex for the Women's Weekly to condescend to actually explain to their readership. No, best keep to Royal fantasy, as that's what sells copy. Anyone who knows anything about the issues getting even the most basic changes through for the succession knows it's fanciful stuff but nonetheless Women's Weekly decided to lead with it.

All of this just weeks before Prince Charles is upon us, on yet another New Zealand taxpayer-funded Royal tour. Perhaps the Weekly didn't get the memo on trying to present Charles as our next head of State, no questions asked. Or perhaps they know that's the case and for now want to indulge their readership in ultimately futile fantasy. Either way, it's all a bit sad.
