About

This section contains information about the Republican Movement - who's involved, our principles and objectives, what we do and how to contact us.

The Republican Movement was founded in 1994 by a group of students at Victoria University. Because they came from many different political backgrounds, they called the group the "Republican Coalition". In 1999, responding to increased interest in republicanism because of the referendum on the issue in Australia, the group renamed itself the "Republican Movement".

Since then, the Republican Movement has continued to campaign for a republic, and has grow into a nationwide, informal network of New Zealanders supportive of a New Zealand republic.

Goals and activities

The Republican Movement is a campaign group for a New Zealand republic with a New Zealander as head of State.

Policy statement

Our policy statement is our principle document defining what we're campaigning for. The fundamental questions of the decision to become a republic, the type of republic, how the head of State will be elected and the powers of the head of state should all be decided at a referendums.
