Republican Movement welcomes Constitutional Advisory Panel

MEDIA RELEASE 4 August 2011

"The Republican Movement welcomes the announcement of the 12 independent members of the Constitutional Advisory Panel this afternoon. Like the Republican Movement, the panel's membership is drawn from all sides of politics and sectors of New Zealand society" said Lewis Holden, chair of the Republican Movement.

"We continue to call on the government to add a New Zealand republic to the terms of reference to the review. An independent head of state is one of the issues many New Zealanders want discussed by the review" continued Mr Holden.

"Various members of the panel have expressed their views on New Zealand transitioning to a republic. Dr Cullen, for example, called for a gradual transition, while Professor Ranginui Walker has discussed a New Zealand republic in the context of the Treaty at length" concluded Mr Holden.

The Republican Movement is a network of New Zealanders who want our head of state to be elected by New Zealanders - either directly or indirectly.

We are committed to:

  • involving all New Zealanders in the republic debate;
  • providing relevant and reliable information;
  • focusing on ideas, not personalities;
  • winning a referendum to establish the republic;

Creating a republic does not require any change to the Treaty of Waitangi, flag or Commonwealth membership. For more information, see our website: www.republic.org.nz

It would be better to have people from all walks of life and not just high profile. I mean having public forums etc would be nice.

Fair call Col, although we don't know what form the public "consultation" will take. Hopefully they will go beyond the normal select committee style ("you've got 10 minutes to speak to this issue. Go!"). Watch this space!
