Republic Debate Goes Public

MEDIA RELEASE: 2 March 2010

University debating societies up and down the country are holding debates with the Republican Movement in March, taking Keith Locke's Head of State Referenda Bill to the public.

"The Prime Minister does not want to give the public a say on whether to have a referendum this time round, so we're taking the debate to where it matters - the people of New Zealand" said Lewis Holden, chair of the Republican Movement.

Debates will be held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, New Zealand's three main centres:

- 11 March - Canterbury University
- 15 March - Victoria University of Wellington
- 24 March - Auckland University

"A republic is a chance to improve our democratic traditions. We want to empower ordinary New Zealanders and remind our elected representatives that power comes from the people, not from Buckingham Palace. That's exactly why the Republican Movement encourages as many New Zealanders to engage in the debate as possible" concluded Mr Holden.

I have just taken a look at the refurbished site at www.monarchy.org.nz/index.html and their Banner image of government house has the crown and NZ to the right of it. Do you think they deliberately used a different crown from the one (St Edwards) that is used in NZ to represent the Crown, the Queen and the GG? It looks like the Crown used in Edwardian times.

No idea- perhaps the St Edwards (hmm... not very secular) Crown is Crown Copyright? I can't figure out what that Crown is - but they do use St Edwards as their website icon.

I think it looks like a simplified tudor crown. Maybe even the Scottish crown. Elizabeth II must have chosen the St Edwards crown for her cipher.
"The same Tudor Crown surmounted the Royal Cyphers of Kings George V, Edward VIII, and George VI"
"Flags designed since 1953 have a St Edward's crown (unless they are Scottish); flags designed before 1953 continued with the existing Tudor crown until they needed replacing."

Nope there is nothing secular about HM - she seems to pay more than lip service to her christianity. Maybe that is why she decided to go with the St Edward's Crown - although all the crowns have christian symbols.
