Monarchists: most republicans "very angry"
Monarchy New Zealand, responding to Matt McCarten's article from the Herald on Sunday, says:
As for New Zealand's political reality, we challenge Monarchy New Zealand to refute McCarten's claim that:
Sure, some of the language used by Matt is unhelpful. But that doesn't make him or any other republican "angry" in any way. The real anger, if there is any, is from monarchists who don't understand why people don't like the Royal Family anymore.
Matt, like most of the few republicans in NZ, seems to be a very angry man. Like most of them, he relies on numerous errors and only demonstrates his ignorance of NZ’s political reality. He puts forward virtually no arguments in support of his ridiculous position and counts on the shock value of his language to get noticed. He’s like an 8 y/o child that has just realised swearing in public might get you attention. Like a child having a temper-tantrum, it’s probably best just to ignore him. If this is the best republican activists can come up with, “Mrs. Windsor” will be fine.Sadly for the monarchists, McCarten's article is more than just an angry man ranting and swearing. Nor are "most" republicans in New Zealand (at least one in three New Zealanders is not "a few") "angry". We couldn't care less for the Queen or the Royal Family, they're irrelevant to us and New Zealand. Most New Zealanders, on research we've seen, feel the same way.
As for New Zealand's political reality, we challenge Monarchy New Zealand to refute McCarten's claim that:
...we are effectively a republic. There's nothing ignorant at all about what McCarten assessment of New Zealand's political reality. It's backed by academic literature in New Zealand (some of which was written by the Chair of Monarchy New Zealand, Professor Noel Cox). Moreover, it's a much more nuanced and thoroughly thought out analysis than the claims by Monarchy New Zealand that we have three heads of government in New Zealand under the monarchy,
After World War II New Zealand became constitutionally independent and our Government doesn't consult Queen Elizabeth on anything. Our Government has inherited the role of Crown in terms of Waitangi Treaty and there is no appeal to British courts. We separated from the monarchy a long time ago. Now we need to officially divorce. But we can still be friends.
Sure, some of the language used by Matt is unhelpful. But that doesn't make him or any other republican "angry" in any way. The real anger, if there is any, is from monarchists who don't understand why people don't like the Royal Family anymore.

From Matt McCarten: "We separated from the monarchy a long time ago."
As the result of our constitutional evolution, we do have a separation from the Monarch. The retention of the monarchy now hangs on whether we believe in its legitimacy, symbolism and "aura" and whether that outweighs any possible constitutional improvements the retention of the monarchy may be blocking.
At the moment, in effect in NZ, "The Crown" belongs not to Elizabeth II but to the parliamentary-backed Prime Minister, who then lends it to each Governor-General, subject to good behaviour.

So....let's see a show of hands.
Hands up all Republican Movement members who wish to defend the NZ flag and support its continued use as a symbol of NZ.
Totally irrelevant question. Whether we want to keep the flag is a question that can be resolved democratically; to claim that support for changing the flag also means endorsement of illegal activity is nonsense.
If you look hard enough, the answer is on this website - well not specifically on our membership, but on New Zealand republicans.
