Of the Pacific?

Talofa lava, Malo e lei lei, Kia orana

Is New Zealand 'in the Pacific' or is it 'of the Pacific'? Join the Republican Movement and make sure that Pacific Island communities have their say in the republic debate.

In a recent discussion on Radio New Zealand National, Professor James Belich said:

"Republicanism is about how we see our place in the Pacific ...after Maori and Pakeha, Pacific islanders are, arguably, in the process of formulating themselves into New Zealand's third home-grown people, a blend of Pacifica or 'Nesian' which is particularly obvious in youth culture"

Dr Ngatata Love said:

"The process of change needs to be a conversation with every community in the nation. There is a cultural shift. we've moved from just being 'in the Pacific' to being 'of the Pacific ...we are of the Pacific now ...[i]n terms of the growth the population, it is browning and Maori and Pacifica are becoming more pronounced. Over the next decade the Treaty is going to be a fundamental issue ...of whether we can move ahead in peace and harmony and certainly in the framework of the republic I believe we can and I believe we should start working on that right now"

BUT, are the traditions and ways of Pacific Island people a true part of New Zealand's political culture and constitution?
