Letter to the editor: "US democracy"

A reader of The New Zealand Herald writes in today's letters to the editor:

"Some are agitating for our system to be changed to a similar system [to the US] because they consider it is out of date. It would appear ours is far more advanced than that particular republican system.

So shouldn't they [the US] be learning from us, not we learning from them?

R. Hood, Auckland Central"

While Mr Hood may have some valid points on the US republican model, the reality is that no-one is seriously proposing the US model for New Zealand. Keith Locke's Head of state (Referenda) Bill puts forward two models roughly the same as the Irish and German models, and as noted below Peter Dunne supports a head of state much like the Irish presidency. Both of these models are good examples of Parliamentary republics.
