Will Royal Commissions go the way of God Save the Queen?

In 1977, New Zealand's government adopted God Defend New Zealand as our national anthem, with equal status to God Save the Queen. Over the years God Defend New Zealand has become the dominant anthem, and few New Zealanders younger than thirty would know the words to God Save the Queen by heart. This contrasts with the older generation, who once stood to God Save the Queen before every screening at the movies. God Save the Queen is only played at public events which involve the Royals or the Governor-General.

In short, even though God Save the Queen is "equal" to God Defend New Zealand, the reality is that God Defend New Zealand now dominates. Now, the government has resolved to keep "Royal Commissions" alongside Public Inquiries. No Right Turn says:

This is simply the colonial cringe in action. It is also pure spin. Royal commissions will differ from the new public inquiries only in name, but apparently we're meant to trust the latter more (and the former less) because of the presence or absence of the word "royal". Wouldn't it be better to instead look at the substance...?

However, it may be that Royal Commissions simply go the way of God Save the Queen. No-one will miss them because we've replaced them with better alternatives.
