Constitutional Inquiry - the Government announced a constitutional inquiry at the Labour Party conference on 13 November 2004. While the genesis of the inquiry is in the debate around the Treaty of Waitangi, the inquiry will be able to cover related constitutional issues, including republicanism.
Support for a republic in NZ is still around 40%, with around 45% of people supporting a monarchy. While an online Stuff poll on 8 November showed 51% (2869 people) of the population supporting a republic compared to 49% (2693 people) supporting a monarchy, we know that there is a great deal of work to be done to get the public voting for a republic. A constitutional inquiry, with public discussion and information, could help to move that goal forward.
