Poll: Most Australians want to dump monarch

AFP reports a poll of 1,400 Australians has found 52% would support a republic, with 40% supporting the monarchy and 8% undecided. The poll was conducted after Malcolm Turnbull's election to the leadership of the Liberal Party.

Update: The Australian notes that support for a republic has remained static since 2004, decreasing slightly since the peak in 1999 of 57%.

Canadians not proud of the monarchy

It's Canada Day, and Angus Reid Strategies has published a survey on what makes Canadians proud. The monarchy rates in the bottom three institutions:

Only 36 per cent of Canadians feel “very proud” or “moderately proud” about the Monarchy. The number plunges in Quebec (23%) and rises significantly in Alberta (44%) and Ontario (42%)—although a majority of respondents in every region describe feeling “not too proud” or “not proud at all.”

Male respondents (30%), those aged 35-54 (34%), and those with a household income between $50,000 and $99,000 (29%), and a college or university education (both 34%) also are less likely to express pride towards the Monarchy than their respective counterparts.

The Sunday Age: 35% of Australians think a republic is important

Melbourne's Sunday Age reports a study has found that 35% of Australian adults think that a republic is "important" for their country. Of course, the monarchists are happy with this result, and say they have "lead" in the polls. This is nonsense - firstly because the question only asks if voters think a republic is an important issue. Whether voters see the issue as important or not is not the same as asking if they support a republic. Secondly, the "importance" of an issue does not show how electors would vote in a referendum.

TVNZ poll: 67% for monarchy, 25% for republic

TVNZ appear to have re-run their March poll on whether New Zealand should become a republic. The results show a marginal shift in favour of the monarchy - with 67% for "the Queen as head of state" and 25% for a republic. The last TVNZ poll had support for a republic at 28% versus the monarchy at 66%. TVNZ's polls are almost always strongly pro-monarchy, and as such are out of line with almost every other poll published (TV3, Sunday-Star Times, New Zealand Herald, NBR, etc):

Green Party MP Keith Locke says it's an anachronism that we're still tied to the British crown on the other side of the world but the role of the mother country seems one most are happy to go along with.

While 25% want New Zealand to become a republic, 67% want the Queen to remain head of state.
