#changetheoath

A new campaign to change the oath has begun, proposing the new oath:

"I swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Tangata Whenua and the Crown, according to law, that I will honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and faithfully observe the laws of New Zealand and fulfil my duties as a New Zealand citizen."

Their reasoning is that the current oath only acknowledges one partner to the Treaty of Waitangi - te Tiriti o Waitangi. From a republican perspective, the proposed oath keeps “the Crown.” Perhaps we could substitute “Kawanatanga” which according to Moana Jackson is the Crown and Parliament.
