The Palace Letters: time for a more transparent head of state

The Palace Letters have now been released. The Australian Financial Review has the details. No doubt the arguments over who knew what when will continue for many years. The fundamental questions though are why the question of whether the Palace knew is even relevant at all. As Ben Jones put it:

"This is the crux of the Palace Letters: If the Queen meddled with Australia, that is a scandal. If she doesn't care about Australia, why is she our Head of State?"

The letters underline the need for more transparent heads of state in both Australia and New Zealand. It took many years and a major legal challenge in the courts to get these letters released. There shouldn’t be secret letters that need to be released in the first place.
