Another Commonwealth member puts head of state issue to the ballot

The Prime Minister of St Vincent & the Grenadines is proposing to put the issue of the country’s head of state to a referendum, to be held late this year or early next year.

Following the disastrous and expensive Royal tours of earlier this year, Prime Minister Dr. Gonsalves said to parliament:

"I will tell you this. I am prepared, if the opposition agrees today, before the end of the year or early next year to put one question in a referendum: to have a home-grown president in the manner in which I've just described, a non-executive president, and as was laid out in the proposed constitution..."

A vote was held in 2009 on this issue as well, as part of wider constitutional changes. But the referendum received only 43% of support, and the Queen remained head of state.
